Day 249 – Back Deck Bench

A little group of blue wrens have moved into our backyard. I don’t know if you can hear them in the recording, but they’re here right now. There’s one male and three females, and we keep saying the same birds every day now. They really are the sweetest little birds. You can see them ‘talking’ […]

Day 248 – Tennis Court Bench

I went for a surf this morning for the first time in a while this morning. I was a bit nervous that I wouldn’t be able to surf any more. I got two good waves. There’s this teenage magpie that hangs around the tennis courts. We heard him squawking away asking for food the whole […]

Day 246 – Northern Bench

The birds around the Bench are singing so sweetly today. In the recording all you would hear is the wind in the trees and about five different types of birds singing. It’s interesting, the cuckoo-shrike I saw up at Switchback Bench the other day is here. It’s the first time I’ve seen here.

Day 245 – Private Bench

As I was sitting here, I saw this Red Wattlebird just dive down to dip into the water. He came back three or four times. I was surprised to see him taking a bath in such deep water. In the photo, he’s just come out and he’s flying back to the tree. There’s also a […]

Day 243 – Blue Wren Bench

It’s an overcast, rainy day. It’s very humid. The cascades were gushing. I’ve come back to where the Bench used to be. Where there’s now just two holes in the ground. I saw a new bird. I think it was a black faced cuckoo-shrike. I’m going to have to go home and look it up. […]

Day 240 – Private Bench

At Private Bench the duckling family is here and the ducklings have grown. I saw them today. There’s five of them left. They’re quite big now. They swam quickly across the river.

Day 239 – Big Old Tree Bench

It is a glorious day down at the Big Old Tree. It is sunny and beautiful. There’s birds everywhere. We just saw an Azure Kingfisher fly by really close. The flood has clearly been the whole way through here, and you can see a very defined line between where the water went up to. Everything […]

Day 238 – Northern Bench

And just like that the water drops and the whole Bench is back and the walking path is back. You wouldn’t know that it all happened except for the grass is flattened and muddy, and there’s debris stuck to the trees. This tree is by the path and the debris is at my shoulder height. […]

Day 233 – Back Deck Bench

Last night and today it has rained constantly. There’s frogs in the puddle behind my back fence once again. There’s been big floods in many parts of the state, and I can’t wait to go down and check the river tomorrow morning. Everything here is wet. There’s water droplets everywhere and the rain is still […]

Day 232 – Back Deck Bench

This photo captured the moment for me. A big storm is coming. They are forecasting a big rain event for tomorrow and flood warnings have been issued. It’s warm, humid and still out here. The clouds are low, dark and ominous. A flock of ibis’ passed silently overhead, across the only brighter patch in the […]
